I recently watched the Made by Google event on October 4th. The event covered some awesome new products that Google will be releasing. In this post I will be sharing a first look at the Pixel 2 by Google.
First Look at the Pixel 2
Lets start with the reason I was watching the live stream in the first place: the Pixel 2. I had heard many rumors about this device leading up to the event. I was eager to get a first look at the device and hear people’s initial reactions.
The Pixel 2 looks very similar to the first Pixel in terms of design (which is slightly disappointing). However the Pixel 2 XL has slightly less bezels in a much larger form factor (which looks much better).
Both the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL feature roughly the same internal hardware and software specs. The tech specs for the Pixel 2 are pretty high end. However it would have been nice to see a 256GB model and an SD card slot.
- OS: Android 8.0.0 Oreo
- Processor: Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 835
- Storage: 64GB or 128GB (Pixel 2 does not have an SD card slot for expandable memory)
- RAM: 4GB
- Rear Camera:
- 12 megapixel sensor
- f/1.8 aperture lens
- records video up to 4k resolution at 30 frames per second
- Front Camera:
- 8 megapixel sensor
- f/2.4 aperture lens
- records video up to 1080p resolution at 30 frames per second
- Battery Capacity: 2700 mAh (Pixel 2) and 3250 (Pixel 2 XL)
The new Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL both feature water and dust resistance with an IP67 rating. This is a huge improvement from the first Pixel which did not have either water or dust resistance.
However most flagship devices on the market feature IP68 water and dust resistance. It would have been nice to see the same rating for the Pixel 2.
Best Camera Ever?
The main focus of the first Pixel was its highly rated camera. A decent portion of the presentation was dedicated to the camera on the Pixel 2.
DXOMark gave the Pixel 2’s camera a 98 rating, which is the highest rating ever received (for whatever that’s worth). If you want to read more about the Pixel 2’s rating be sure to check out DXOMark’s article.
After seeing some of the pictures taken by people at the event I am very excited for this camera. Google has proven that they can produce excellent smartphone cameras in the past. I can’t wait to get my hands on the device and test out the camera quality for myself.
Share Your Thoughts on Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL
Overall I think the Pixel 2 XL is a great improvement from the first Pixel. However I am skeptical that it can compete with the latest flagship devices such as the Galaxy Note 8. Let me know what you guys think of the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL in the comments down below.
