I was recently given a Fitbit Alta as a gift and have not taken it off since. In the Fitbit Alta review I will share with you my personal thoughts on the device as a fitness tracker.
Additionally I will split the Fitbit Alta review into three main sections: design, functionality and the companion app. Finally my goal with this review is to give my recommendation as to why you should or should not buy the Fitbit Alta.
Fitbit Alta Overview
The Fitbit Alta is a unique device that promotes physical activity. Additionally the Fitbit Alta has a sleek design which makes it perfect for anyone. Finally the Fitbit Alta pairs with your mobile phone to add statistics such as steps walked and time slept.
Design – Fitbit Alta Review
In this section of the review we will be looking at the overall design of the Alta. The Fitbit Alta consists of two major components: the band and the tracker.
The Alta comes with a sleek colored band that is made of a rubber material. Additionally the included strap feels and looks like it was designed for athletic use.
I am personally a huge fan of the black strap that came with my Fitbit. Also the design of the band makes it great for wearing to the gym, going to work or just sitting on the couch. Finally since the Alta band can be replaced it makes perfect for anybody’s unique style.
Checkout These Fancier Bands for the Alta
The Fitbit Alta has thousands of different bands to pick from, here are a few:
- Genuine Leather Alta Band
- Fitbit Alta Stainless Steel Replacement Band
- Vancle Fitbit Alta Bands
- Fitbit Alta Sports Band
As seen in the image, the actual display of the Alta is tiny. With such a sleek profile, the tracker does not draw much attention. Also the top of the display is dark black while the sides of the device are a stainless steel gray. The contrast with the black display and stainless steel bezels add a unique and subtle look to the Alta.
One of the most important aspects of a fitness tracker is the batter life. During my initial use with the Fitbit Alta I have been getting around 7 days of battery life. Please note that this will depend on the user’s settings on the device (e.g. notifications turned on and amount of usage).
Overall the design of the Alta is simplistic and subtle. If you are looking for something to wear on a day- to-day basis and want to stay fashionable then the Alta is an excellent choice.
Functionality – Fitbit Alta Review
The next section for the review contains an in-depth look at the functionality of the Fitbit Alta. More specifically we will examine the exercise tracking, sleep tracking and notifications to assess the functionality.
The most important feature for the Fitbit Alta is the fitness tracking. Without fitness tracking this device would just be a glorified watch.
The fitness tracker has four different display modes when turned on. The first mode has a pair of shoes on it and shows how many steps a user has taken during the day. The next mode has a location marker and tells a user how far they have walked or run that day. The third mode indicated by a fire icon shows how many calories a person has burned for the day. The last mode which has a lighting bolt on it shows how many minutes of activity a person has completed in their day.
Step Counter Test
In my personal tests, the Fitbit Alta was very accurate. I performed a simple test by taking 100 steps and comparing it with how many were tracked by the Alta. After taking 100 steps, the Alta read 97 steps. This simple tests indicates there is a small margin of error (3%) in the tracking of every step. Please note that this was only conducted once and therefore the results may vary by user.
Another amazing feature of the Fitbit Alta is its ability to tell you how long you have slept for. In addition to the amount of time slept the Alta shows how many times you woke up or had restless sleep during the night. This is one of my favorite features as a student who never seems to get enough sleep. Lastly with the sleep tracking it encourages users to get the recommended amount of sleep that they need.
The last feature I want to discuss in the Fitbit Alta review is the notifications. The Fitbit Alta has the power to connect with your smartphone via bluetooth. With the ability to connect to your phone, the Alta can display texts, show calendar events and remind you to stop being lazy.
Companion App – Fitbit Alta Review
The last topic of discussion for the Fitbit Alta review is the companion application for iOS and Android. When you first setup the Fitbit Alta you will be asked to download the Fitbit app. During this process you will choose how you want the watch face to look. The application is a great tool for extra functionality such as extended statistics, community leaderboards and challenges.
As seen in the screenshot above, the Fitbit application will give you extended statistics for the week, In addition to giving a weekly report, users can track statistics daily, monthly or even yearly. This is an awesome feature to track your fitness goals and progression!
As seen in the screenshot above the application has a section called community. The community section allows you to connect with your Fitbit friends and family and share statistics and goals. This is an excellent feature if you are a very competitive person and have to be number 1. Also the community feature encourages competition which can be used as motivation to meet your fitness goals.
The last major feature of the Fitbit application are the community driven challenges. In these challenges, users can virtually compete with their friends to see who can make it to the finish line first. I believe this is a game changing feature because it encourages people to meet with friends at a physical location and get some great exercise!
Should You Buy It?
I personally love my Fitbit Alta because of its sleek design and suite of functionalities. If you are looking to get more active in your life then a Fitbit is a great choice. The device helps keep you motivated and away from the doughnuts… most of the time. I can honestly say that the Fitbit Alta has surpassed all my expectations and I recommend to anyone.
The final question remains… should you buy it? If you want to get more active and need a reason why then I say buy the Fitbit Alta.
