If you told me on Friday that I would be witnessing a human-sized robot perform a backflip, I would have called you crazy. However, as I was scrolling through YouTube the video by Boston Dynamics appeared and I have never clicked on something so fast in my life. Here is the video of the backflipping robot for those of you who still haven’t seen this monumental achievement in the world of robotics.
Boston Dynamics Continues to Impress
The well-known company named Boston Dynamics continues to impress me with their accomplishments in the field of robotics. Over the years I have witnessed many companies build and demo robots that are very “robot-like”. However, Boston Dynamics has found a way to create the first robots that can traverse the real world fluidly and dynamically.
The robots built by Boston Dynamics have fluid movements and mechanics that replicate those of humans and animals. It is both scary and fascinating to watch a robot jump and perform activities better than the average human. Here is another video by the company, which features their “dog-like” robot called SpotMini.
Atlas the Next Generation
Boston Dynamics describes its backflipping robot ‘Atlas’ as “The World’s Most Dynamic Humanoid. Atlas uses balance and whole-body skills to achieve two-handed mobile manipulation.”
The humanoid weighs in at 75 kg (165 lbs) and is 1.5 m (5 ft) tall. Atlas features many sensors and advanced software in order to help keep its balance. In some videos of the robot an employee at Boston Dynamics can be seen pushing Atlas to try and knock it over. However Atlas is able to adjust its weight distribution in order to prevent from falling.
Additionally the robot is able to perform simple tasks such as lifting boxes and can place them on a conveyor belt with ease. With the help of an advanced joint system, Atlas is also able to easily jump, walk and run similarly to a human.
Boston Dynamics has continually improved the performance and efficiency of Atlas over the years. I can’t wait to see the true capabilities of this humanoid in the upcoming years.
Final Thoughts on the Backflipping Robot
Atlas is a monumental achievement for robotics and I am extremely excited to see the development of this project. Boston Dynamics continues to prove that they are the best at what they do.
Pretty soon humanoids such as Atlas will be seen in warehouses doing backflips and moving boxes at the same time. It is an exciting time in the world of robotics and the future is here thanks to the team at Boston Dynamics.
